Greater Sudbury, which includes communities such as Sudbury, Capreol, Nickel Centre,
Onaping Falls, Balfour, Valley East and Walden, is the largest city in Northeastern
Ontario with a population of approximately
165,000 people. Located 390 km (242 mi) north of Toronto,
Sudbury is serviced by major highways, including the Trans Canada Highway, and
acts as a gateway to more remote parts of Northern Ontario. At one time, Sudbury
had a reputation for being incredibly polluted due to the city's largest industry—mining.
However, over the past couple of decades, Sudbury has undergone a furious and
costly clean-up project, which has seen almost eight million trees reintroduced
into the city's landscape and international attention for its concerted environmental
efforts. With over 250 lakes and a ski
hill within its boundaries, the City of Greater Sudbury has plenty of recreational
opportunities. Soak up the summer sun and have some fun at the annual Summerfest
in August.
